There are two basic past tenses in Turkish. One is permormed by adding -DI (-di, -du, -dü, -tı, -ti, -tu, -tü), and the other is performed by adding -MIŞ (-miş, -muş, -müş). If you witnessed the event YOURSELF, then you should use the FIRST version. - Ona yaşını sorDUm =I asked him his age. - Bana arabasını gösterDİ =He showed me his car. If you didnt witness the event but you are told about what happened, or maybe you learned it from someone else, then you should use the SECOND version. It is often used when you are telling a story which didnt happen to you, like fairy tales. Or maybe one of your friends told you a story, or maybe you learned something from internet and you are sharing it with your friends. Then you should use this version. - Kralın bir kızı varMIŞ (The king had a daughter). Kız çok güzelMİŞ (She was very beautiful). If you will say "Kralın bir kızı varDI", someone will ask "How do you know? Did you see it yourself?" - Ben oraya gitmeDİm (I didnt go there). Ama bir arkadaşım gitMİŞ (But one of my friend did). Çok kalabalıkMIŞ (It was so crowded). Yemekleri de lezzetli değilMİŞ (Moreover food wasnt delicious either) (I m using the second version because what I m telling is, what he told me earlier.
