What's the meaning of this sentence? I know it was a terrible thing to write that letter. What I don’t know is where it fits in with all of the other terrible things I think about. At some point along the way I stopped believing in significance. Order became an accident of observation. I’ve come to accept that parts of life are constant, that just because something happens on two different days doesn’t make it a goddamn miracle. All I really know for sure is that no matter how long I live, and no matter how I spend that time, those scales aren’t ever coming level. Murph’s always going to be eighteen, and he’s always going to be dead. And I’ll be living with a promise that I couldn’t keep. In this paragraph, what's the meaning of "Order became an accident of observation." What does "those scales" refer to and what's the meaning of "come level" in "those scales aren't ever coming level"? Thanks!

In Greek mythology, the Fates used scales to weigh/measure equal amounts of good and bad into a person's life. This became that person's fate. The expression "the scales aren't [ever] coming level", means there is more bad than good in a person's life. It means that fate was unfair, by giving more bad than good.

I like this question! This is the kind of written English that even confuses us English-speaking natives! :)

Those scales, metaphorically, those two scales are order and non-accidence. "Those scales will never be level" meaning the order and non-accidence will never agree with each other. The author is trying to say just because you have occurances in your life that point to a truth, doesn't make it the truth. ___________________ Example: Let's say you are in love with someone. The clouds spelled out his name that day! And then the next day you heard his favorite song on the radio! These two occurances must mean that he is the one! he is your future husband!!! <--However nice these occurances are, it may not be the(future) truth. _______________________ Do you understand? :)
