What does "cushion" mean in the text below?
Because hunter-gatherer societies do not grow and store crops, there are bound to times of short supply. To survive such occasions, humans can build up a cushion of fat. When there are no shortages, fat continues to build, creating its own health problems.

Cushion contains a double meaning here:
1) a margin for error or miscalculation, and
2) a soft mass.
