Cristina
What does 'shotgun' mean? It comes from Grey's Anatomy.Below is what they said. Burke: So I heard we got a wet fish on dry land? Bailey: Absolutely Dr. Burke. Burke: Dr. Bailey, let’s gonna shotgun her. Does 'shotgun' mean 'save'?

You've misheard it because it doesn't make any sense at all. If you can get me an audio sample, I'll tell you what they say and what it means. :)

There is a phrase 'to use a shotgun approach' - a shotgun at a distance SCATTERS pellets over a wide area ... A shotgun approach to a problem or question means trying to solve a problem without any specific ideas of what the answer or solution might be.

Christina: 博迈克 has close to the correct answer. "Shotgun" is actually a form of Advertising Technique. Shotgun Shells, at least in terms of "bird shot" can fire dozens and even hundreds of Lead Pellets. As a Sales Technique, an equivalent form of advertising your product or business would be like taking a box or several boxes of your business cards to a local Sporting Event like a Football game. Then, every time your team scores a Goal, you jump up with all the happy fans around you, that Throw half a box of your Business cards into the air. That is "Shotgunning". Also, distributing "flyers" such as a Thousands of Photocopies of your advertisement on Cars, House Doors and so forth, is also a form of "Shotgunning.' Also, advertising with Newspaper Ads, Radio Ads, TV ads, and BillBoards to get customers, is also a form of "Shotgunning". So with the Medical Tests and Lab Work, as in: That means every test in the book, CT, CBC, chem. seven, tux screen, Cristina, you're on labs, George, patient workups, Meredith, get Katie for a CT, she's your responsibility now. It refers to trying every possible medical test that can be done to get a proper diagnosis of the patient. .---Warm Regards, Bruce

I looked this up and actually the next line in the script actually defines what that means! Burke: Dr. Bailey, I'm gonna shotgun her. Bailey: That means every test in the book, CT, CBC, chem. seven, tux screen, Cristina, you're on labs, George, patient workups, Meredith, get Katie for a CT, she's your responsibility now. This seems to be medical slang. I've never heard it before. "Every test in the book" means "every test that exists." After that is a list of different kinds of medical tests. Why shotgun? Perhaps because many shotguns don't fire a bullet, but instead fire dozens of tiny pieces of metal that fly in a lot of different directions. People often do this when they are hunting birds. They hope that one of the little pieces will hit the bird, although almost all of the pieces will miss. In a similar way, the doctors don't know what is wrong with the patient so they are going to run every test they can and hope that one of the tests gives them a useful answer.

Normally you use a weapon appropriate for your specific prey. When you use a shotgun you might bring down anything. The analogy is that a shotgun approach to medicine uses everything possible including pre-emptive treatment in order to save the patient's life.
