Hi,
I don't pretend to give an "official explanation" but as native Latin American Spanish speaker I use "a" when I tell somebody about an action that I'll do or is happening to me. Thus, "a" is commonly used when you talk about your own actions.
Ex:
- Voy a la playa (I'm going to the beach)
- Tengo que viajar a Brazil mañana. (I've to travel to Brazil tomorrow.)
- Nos vemos el viernes a las 8pm. (We see you on Friday at 8pm.)
- Le debo dinero a mi novia. (I owe money to my girlfriend.
In all the statements above you use "a" when you talk about something of yourself.
Hope this helps!
