in contrast Hello. What's the difference between “by contrast ” and “in contrast” ?

Hi Joy. 'By contrast' and 'in contrast' with mean the same thing. Their usage is slightly different. 'In contrast ' must be followed by a noun. Example: In contrast with dogs, cats meow. 'By contrast' usually follows or precedes the subject as in the above sentence. Even though their meanings are similar they are not interchangeable.
