Some american phrases and spellings are (sadly) engrained even over here. People mightn't go to the mall, but they'll totally call an elevator. Sceptical is still the British version, but that's not to say British people only ever use it.

Sceptical is the British spelling. Much the same way that colour, realise and grey are also British spellings.

Hello Aureli As an American, this is the first time that I was made aware of a variant spelling. Indeed, Americans write skeptical; but it is not a serious issue. Minor spelling differences are not critical. I mean, nobody is going to have a cow over the issue. .

I speak British English, and I would naturally spell it skeptical. Perhaps I've been swayed by seeing http://www.skeptics.org.nz/ I saw it spelled as sceptical in a cryptic crossword recently, and got confused by seeing it that way.

Honestly, I've really never seen the word being spelled as "skeptical". I am aware of the possibility of it being spelled in that way, but I've never actually seen it. I always spell it as "scetpical" and that's how I find it in books, newspapers, etc. P.S. I'm talking about the American English, not the British one. But to be perfectly honest, besides few examples (like colour, realise, grey, honour...), I don't really know which one is British and which one is American. When I'm writing, if my spellchecker doesn't mark a word as wrongly spelled, I consider the spelling to be correct XD So, my answer would be, use whichever you want. You are definitely going to be understood by everyone :) That's what I do, anyway.
