I am not sure why the author take it for the example. If there is to be toleration in the world, one of the things taught in schools must be the habit of weighing evidence, and the practice of not giving full consent to propositions which there is no reason to believe true. For example, the art of reading newspapers should be taught. The schoolmaster should select some incident which happened a good many years ago, and roused political passions in its day. Why should the schoolmaster select some incident which happened a good many years ago, and roused political passions in its day? A variety of sources was going to be gotten about the incident because it happened way long ago and there are left many other opinions and references to weigh the evidence? I am not sure why the author take it for the example. Please help me! Thanks!

Possibly because if you choose an historical example, the students are less likely to have strong personal feelings about it and so can concentrate on impartially weighing the evidence presented by both sides rather than their preconceived opinions. If you choose a current political/social issue, people will probably just agree with their own pre-existing opinion. That's how I interpret it anyway.
