Would anybody tell me which sentence is correct?
He said, "I am sorry I broke the glass"
=>
1. He apologized for breaking the glass.
2. He apologized for having broken the glass.

In common American English, I think both 1 and 2 sound fine. Someone can possibly give a reason why #1 is not correct, but I do not know the reason. Also #2 sounds a more formal or stiff.
