It has a Lexile score of 1000. Don't expect the English to be EASY. I think it is intended to be read TO children, not to be read BY children. It uses good grammar, good English usage, good writing style, good vocabulary, and is free from colloquialisms and slang, so it is a good book "for learning English." The general tone of voice is soft--like a fairy tale, not like an action thriller. If you tackle it, be ready to come back here with more questions. Here's a long, relatively difficult sentence from the book: "'All the same, I should like it all plain and clear," said he obstinately, putting on his business manner (usually reserved for people who tried to borrow money off him), and doing his best to appear wise and prudent and professional and live up to Gandalf's recommendation." Here's a relatively easy one--still long, though: "'There they mined and they tunnelled and they made huge halls and great workshops--and in addition I believe they found a good deal of gold and a great many jewels, too."

It's definitely easier than the Lord of the Rings books. The Hobbit was written as a children's book, so it shouldn't be too hard. The author was an Oxford professor though, and he played around with language a bit so the style is somewhat poetic. I read The Hobbit when I was six or seven without any problems except the occasional word I didn't know. I tried reading Fellowship of the Ring immediately afterwards, but found it much harder and couldn't finish until I tried again a few years later. I say give it a shot and keep a dictionary handy. I just looked up the books' Lexile ratings, and Fellowship of the Ring supposedly has a lower Lexile rating than the Hobbit. I'm not sure what to make of that.

You could enjoy a good English Practice if some native speaker reads over this with you. These Poems and some songs were once available on a Long Play record, which by now, is a collectible. I recall hearing these recordings of Tolkien's voice and it was a special treat to hear him dramatize his characters in these poems. I think this was published 1975 http://www.amazon.com/Towers-Return-J-R-R-Tolkien-vintage/dp/B000FCU33C/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1422718080&sr=1-1&keywords=jrr+tolkien

The English is perhaps a little difficult, but the Hobbit is probably the easiest of Tolkien's books. Plus, if you already know the story, that will make it a lot easier to read, and if you enjoy it, you will be motivated to keep reading. :) So why not? Give it a try!

It is a good book but I am not sure how easy it is to read. This book was written about 50 years ago so maybe the language will be a little difficult for you.But give it a try anyway!
