How would you interpret ‘smoke’ here? My friends are all green that I am hep to Shep, especially when I told them about your movie package. Holy Joe, congrats on that. Could you find a tiny role for me? I’ll be the lad in the loincloth sitting on a rock, smoking a herd of Camels during the battle scene, trying to sneak a gander at Robert Taylor. Lord and Butler, that fellow is cuter than snappers. And pointing the finger at anything pink now, I see in the papers. How would you interpret ‘smoke’ in the phrase: smoking a herd of Camels? Thanks! And this excerpt is taken from The Lacuna by Kingsolver.

"Camels" are a brand of cigarettes. In the sentence, the speaker uses some wordplay to suggest both the animal and the tobacco product.
