I think it would really depend where in Europe you're going. English might actually be a good Lingua Franca (oh, the irony).

It absolutely depends on where you are going. French is spoken in France, of course, but also in parts of Switzerland, Belgium, and Luxembourg. You'll need Spanish in Spain, of course. German is spoken in Germany of course, and also in parts of Switzerland.
