"for example": (比方说/例如/譬如/举例来说):比如? 你好, 我的语法的书说:in order to say "for example", it says you can use the following words: (比方说/例如/譬如/举例来说). It also notes that 譬如 is used in more formal contexts. However, it fails to mention 比如。is 比如 equivalent to these other phrases? Why do you think the author of the grammar book chose not to include it? Is it uncommon? 谢谢!

Don't worry I guess the author didn't include 比如 in it because he somehow doesn't like the word. But it is a word that we use very often when we are ready to give some examples.

is 比如 equivalent to these other phrases? Yes Why do you think the author of the grammar book chose not to include it? I think the author must have missed an apostrophe after 举例来说:) or he should have added ' including but not limited to' to avoid misunderstanding. Is it uncommon? No, all phrases you mentioned above are commonly used.

譬如 is usually used when we write. 比方说 is usually used when we talk. 例如 can be used when we write and when we talk. 举例来说 can be used when we do some speech or when a teacher gives a lesson to his students. they all mean "for example".
