Please check the use of the word 'purge' in this sentence Hi. I was studying some vocabularies and I found the word 'purge' as a related word with 'eliminate' And here is the example sentence of 'purge' "Before we purge the marsh of all wildlife, we should change the way we use the land." Is it correct? because according to meaning on the longman dictionary, it doesn't seem quite right. As a native speaker's point of view, does that sentence make sense or not? thanks

Yes, the sentence is correct. To purge is to get rid of. Please note that "vocabulary" in the sentence that you use it is always uncountable.

In computer term purge means to remove something for good. If you delete something it will be on your storage with a mark 'deleted'. If you purge it, the data will be removed from your storage. So purge means to completely delete/remove something.

It is not an emphasis. Luca is right. It is a matter of meaning. The writer or speaker of the sentence thinks that wildlife is a hindrance or an undesirable thing. It would be the dialogue of, for example, ruthless developers who would rather see suburban houses than wildlife.

Wow. I think you understood exactly what i was wondering. So in this case, the writer used word 'purge' to emphasize the meaning instead of using 'get rid of' or something. Am i right?
