I think it's 90% culture and expectation. It would be silly to pretend that there are no differences between men and women, but--in the United States, anyway--we exaggerate them hugely, hugely, hugely. The pattern is always the same: the difference between individuals within one sex is much larger than any systematic differences between the sexes. In the 2012 Olympics, in the marathon, men ran it in times ranging from 2:08:01 to 2:55:54; women, from 2:23:07 to 3:22:11. "Men ran faster" is true. "Tiki Gelana's time was better than that of 40% of the men" is also true. In the United States, the traditional cultural expectations for women's behavior, as mothers and caregivers, emphasizes some personality traits which can be helpful in teaching... or not. Do I really want a teacher who is too polite to tell me unpleasant things that I need to know? Teaching skill depends on the individual teacher--and, in a one-to-one situation, on the teacher's ability to "read" the student--not on whether the teacher happens to be male or female. I feel that _focussing_ on differences between the genders is best avoided. Even when a small difference can be shown, my reaction is "so what?" Who cares if statistically men have better spatial awareness? In my family, my wife is the one with the "sense of direction." If someone were trying to choose candidates for some job where spatial awareness was of the essence, the rational thing to do would be to test candidates' spatial awareness, not to favor men.
