That is not true, it is just the style of doing karaoke that is different. In western places they have designated Karaoke Nights. The singer would sing in front of many unacquainted people in a large open room, as opposed to singing in small rooms with your friends and your friend's friends in Asian cultures. But of course many Asians have moved over to the west and some of them have started Asian style KTV locations.
