Is 'to go to sleep' really not correct to use? Hi guys, I have known that most of time I should say 'to go to bed', and 'to go to sleep' could have a different meaning. But I heard a native English speaker say "I had to wake up early in the morning because of the work, so I went to sleep early the night before." To go to bed, to go to sleep Could you please help me out to use them properly? Thanks!

"to go to bed" is used when a person needs to change the current place to another in order to sleep. For example, a kid was watching TV late at night, so his mom came and said, "It's time to go to bed." "to go to sleep" is used when a person in already in a place where one can fall asleep. For example, He tucked his son in bed and said, "Go to sleep."

In my mind, "go to bed" and "go to sleep" are equivalent, but normally we say "I'm going to bed."

Why do you think that 'go to sleep' isn't correct? Why are you surprised that somebody said "I had to wake up early in the morning because of the work, so I went to sleep early the night before." ? We can't tell you why this sentence is right until you tell us why you think it is wrong!

Fadwa is correct if we wish to be perfectly technical. In reality, [I need to] "go to sleep" is used interchangeably with [I need to] "go to bed'. The only time they may have different meanings is between a couple. When they say "go to bed", it may refer to sleep or "intimacy".
