None of these words is really a good substitute for mishaps. Saying that they have "resulted from accidents," implies that an accident happened which then led to the scientific breakthrough. The way that you could say it would be to say "the breakthroughs occurred by accident," which has a subtly different meaning and would, in my view, be a better to say this. Please note: The first word of your sentence should say "Though," not "Through."
