what is (certain death) in this sentence? I can`t understand the sentence?
It’s a remarkable solution to what would otherwise be certain death.

Certain death means that someone will die for sure. But someone found a solution ("it is a remarkable soultion") that can save people. Without this solution, they would definitely die.
