I concur with Raymond's suggestion. If you also learn the history and culture, it will greatly help your understanding of the reason behind the combination of characters and radicals. For easier ones, 如 is composed of a woman and the mouth, i.e. her words are iffy and hence to mean "if". Chinese is sexist. Males first before females. Another example, 媚 = sexy, seductive because ancient Chinese males considers the eyebrows of the woman to be sexy. Women had learnt to use makeup since their history began. This is how I started to learn Chinese by breaking them into components. If you wish, write to me and I can give you further examples (and more complicated ones).

I suggest a different approach as follows: 1. Quickly go through the list of radicals just to have a general idea. Do not force yourself to memorize them. 2. When you come across new words that you want to learn, try to keep a vague memory of the overall image of the word without going into the details of strokes. After coming across the same word several times, you will automatically notice more of its details. 3. When it seems that a character contains a radical that you recognize, go back to the list of radicals to confirm it. 4. Keep doing steps 1 to 3. Then you will recognize more and more radicals and words. 5. Learn to write a character only when you are able to recognize it every time you come across it. I think this approach is much easier.

It's not complicated if a Chinese teacher can explain to you the structure and the strokes of Chinese charactersand what the ratical mean. There are only dozes of common raticals, if you remember them, then you can remenber hundres of Characters. For example, 他 , it means he/him. The left part is an very important ratical, it means person,(the ratical is the changing form of person character 人 ) so when you see this ratical, then the character is related with person. 们 also has this ratical, so it means the plural of person or animals. 她 is easier to remenber now. You cange the person ratical into a female 女, the right part does change. So it means she/her. 你 means you. it's a person, so we use this person ratical.

From the beginning with a pen and paper. I personally recommend starting from the common ones like 他 她 它 我 你 您 想 要 去 來 etc. Take it 4 a day and just gradually build up. It seems impossible at the beginning, but it becomes easier with time. Write each character out on a piece of paper many times before moving onto the next one, then repeat regularly. If you want to make sure your proportions are right, use 米格紙.
