Why is it " Hitori de ikimashita" insead of "Hitori ga ikimashita"

Hitori de ikimashita
This means you went to somewhere by your self. Or someone went by him/herself.
Hitori ga ikimashita
This means "one person went"
It's only a little answer but I might add some :)
