The word "probably" looks like a conjunction but it's actually an adverb. If you add "because", which is a rightful conjunction, and make it "probably because", then it'll sound better. (2) If this is from a test and you want to nail this one, you should go on and change "she was" into "she were". We use the past subjunctive after "as if" in formal English. C. Makes sense but not grammatically correct There's a verb agreement error in the second clause. Since the verb in the first clause is in the past tense, we should use "might/may have learned" instead of "may learn" in the second clause. D. Grammatically correct but makes little sense E. Grammatically correct but makes little sense

I would like to point something out to DanO and Austin , first of all the second part of the sentence does not say "may have" , it says so that he " may" learn ... which to me indicates something that has yet to happen but has the possibility of happening , now although " he followed the beggar until the end of the street ", this part of the sentence is past tense, the second part is future tense , which makes using "may" perfectly ok , again the sentence does not say " may have" .... it says "may" one action has taken place " followed the beggar until the end of the street "..... one action still not completed " so that he may learn his real indentity" . Now this sentence could have been worded better.... but I still think "c" and "a" are the best answers. Take it easy !

Hi, DanO, Thanks for pointing out the issue about "might/may have learned". My previous answer you were looking at had actually been edited. I had typed "might learn" in the first place, but then I remembered the word "might" alone could also be used to describe the present and the future, and almost at the same time I vaguely recalled that I read about how you should use "might have + past participle" when you want to talk about the past. To avoid any ambiguity, I then changed "might learn" to "might/may have learned". It turned out I thought too much, haha. Thanks again! ^_^ PS It also amazed me to see how you guys focused more on the logic/reasoning than on the grammar. It's definitely the other way around for us EFL learners. We're forced to pay more attention to grammar, or we won't ace an English test.

i would say A is correct. The other alternative answers are wrong, because there, it is referred to a female person ----she...., and because A sound best lol, but C could be correct, too.

C i guess is correct but i don't like it because at first i thought he was searching for his own identity lol!! i thought A first though. this is a very strange question!! tricky. ^^
