The learning point here is that there is a different form for "subject" questions in the present simple and past simple, compared to "object" questions. "Who won the match?" The answer is: "X" won the match. We don't know who "X" is but when we do, we will know the subject of "won the match". There is no auxiliary verb (did) and we use only the third person verb form in the present simple (e.g. wins) and the past simple verb (e.g. won). "Who did the team beat (in the match)?" The answer is: "The team beat Y". We don't know who Y is but they are the object of "beat". Here, we need (1) the auxiliary verb "do/does" in the present simple and "did" in the past simple and (2) the bare infinitive e.g. beat.
