Hi Bean. This expression is pretty straightforward.
When someone has his/her face down in the dirt, it means he/she has experienced a failure, a big disappointment.
He/she could also be the victim of other people that made him/her feel that way.
They really put his face in the dirt for weeks because he didn't score at the last game...

It can also be the literal meaning, lying down on your stomach.
