Now, I am not going to do any of the things he did. But... I think I learned as a child that you choose only one career, one thing that you master. And that's really scary about being a kid growing up- what if you choose badly? What if you get stuck with a bad job? But the truth is in the modern world everybody changes jobs every seven years. They may be at the same company, but by then they will grow into something bigger- managing for instance. Science of the brain shows that it takes approximately ten years of daily regular work to master something at a high level. So in fact we have plenty of time in our lives to learn many things. Not just learn, but really master! Want to play the saxophone? Want to write poetry? Want to race motorcycles? Want to learn another language? All you have to do is want it, and seek out ways to learn, and people to learn from. There is an expression 'preaching to the choir' which means talking convincingly to people who are already convinced. Like a preacher in church who is urging to the choir, who are already the good people. So I am praising language learning to this group? Forget about it! But anyway, that's how he inspired me. I realized I have time to do many things, and take the time to do them well. It helps when you see someone else do it first sometimes.

It's hard to say who I admire most, becasue I admire many people for different reasons. One person who comes to mind was a guest at our final presentations for a class on permaculture. We all took terms presenting our projects, explaining the details and taking questions. Our guest was a prominent designer whose critique and feedback was wonderful. But his own story (I wish I could recall his name) was tremendously inspiring to me. He had started as a biologist, and become a biology professor. From there he got a job for the government managing wildlife areas, in a place where environemntalists and ranchers were fighting over how the rivers would be used. So he became a diplomat, proved himself the friend of both sides, and forged a solution. And then from that career in politics he went back to school to become an architect (8 year graduate program, btw)! So of course with his experience with both politics and biology, he was a natural architect to become involved with sustainable design. No wonder he was so full of good ideas! But no, he explained, he wasn't doing architecture any more. No??? No. He was enrolled at Bastyr College, a prominent academy of natural medicine. He is now studying to become a naturopathic doctor!!! And when he described taking a patient's pulse, and how listening to the flow of blood was like checking the flow of a river... it all made sense. (more)
