It confuses me a lot.

Best:
Dogs are my favourite pet.
Also grammatical but not necessarily the most idomatic:
My favourite pet is the dog. (formal)
My favourite pets are dogs. (ambiguous)
My favourite pet is dogs. (ungrammatical for some people)
