Would you tell me which one is correct? I ( hadn't heard / hadn't been hearing )from him for ten years when I received his last letter.

I hadn't heard from him for ten years when I received his last letter. (We use the past perfect tense here as the first event, not hearing from your friend, happened for 10 years before the second event, you received the letter. They both happened in the past but the first event ended when the second one happened.)
