What is the difference between ここ and これ？

ここ and これ are both pronouns meaning "this".
これ is used to signify things in general. ここ is used to indicate a place and means "This place". It's more desirable to use than just using a literal translation of "this place" like このところ。
Example: ここは工学部ですか？ --> Is this "place" the faculty of Engineering?
