If I get this right, 张这个字有几画? means "How many strokes does this character have?"
But I don’t understand what 张 is doing at the beginning?
张 is a classificator for 画 (一张画）and a verb meaning ’to open’. So I don’t understand what 张这个字 means.

Thank you. I was so focused on the meaning of 张 that I completely overlooked that the question was only about the number of strokes of 张.

firstly,about the meaning of the sentence ,you are right , in this sentnce ,张 is just a word, because in chinese you will find that our words have their different structure; no matter what meaning of it ,its stroke wont be changed ,right ?
then ,because of difference means ,you cant understand it .张,if as a verb, maening "to open",you are right ,such as "张嘴” ；besides, when it as a noun ,it can be regard "a family name （张飞）" \ a "piece", such as 一张纸、一张桌子。
