모이다 is a passive verb of 모으다. 모으다 : gather; collect; get together(need object) 모이다: be gathered; be collected(need subject) e.g. 유민이는 어릴 때부터 인형을 모으는 취미가 있었다.(인형 is an object of 모으다) 선생님은 학생들을 운동장에 모아 놓고 운동회 일정을 설명해 주었다.(학생들 is an object of 모으다) 이번 봉사활동은 여러 사람들의 뜻이 모여서 시작되었다.(뜻 is a subject of 모이다) 설날에 오랜만에 친척들이 모두 한 장소에 모였다.(친척들 is a subject of 모이다) Someone say that 모이다 is used with people and 모으다 is used with a thing, but that is wrong. e.g. 아이들이 놀이터에 모였다. The children are gathered on the playground. 정부 기관들은 서울에 모여 있다. Government agencies are concentrated in Seoul. 모든 사람들의 시선이 그에게 모였다 All eyes were focused on him. 그는 동네 아이들을 모아 학교 공부를 가르친다 He gathers local children to help them with their school work.

모이다 with people such as 저는 가족과 같이 모였어요. me and my family gathered together. 모으다 with things such as 차를 사려고 돈을 모아요. I collect money to buy a car.
