Is there any difference between in the winter and in winter
I have heard that they are exactly the same but for me it is not true
In the winter refers to a particular winter
and in winter it is general
Am I correct?

"It snows here in winter." This means that it snows here every winter.
"It snowed here in the winter." It doesn't snow here every winter but it did this time.
I suspect that in Amercian English you can say 'It snows here in the winter' and it would mean the same thing as 'it snows here in winter.'
