I believe it is the concept of needing to sleep more than usual to make up for not getting enough sleep one or more nights in a row.

In finance, "debt" is money that you have borrowed, owe, and need to pay back.
Let's suppose you need 7 hours a sleep every day.
Let's say that one night you only get 6 hours. You owe yourself an hour. You have a sleep debt of one hour.
Next night, you get 6 hours again. Now you owe another hour, for a total of two hours.
Can you sleep nine hours the next night and pay back your two-hour sleep debt?
The specifics of whether it works that way are disputed. But that is the idea behind the phrase "sleep debt."

Hi Morvarid
It is the cumulative effect of not getting enough sleep which may lead to future problems.
Usually people have sleep debts due to worries, stress, etc Nowadays many young, and older, people build up huge sleep debts "thanks" to the crazy amount of time spent on social media.
