The tenses in the second one don't align properly. The second half would match with 'Did you expect...' instead, and in that case, it refers to something that happened in the past, so no, they aren't interchangeable.

The first one is correct because the tenses match. Tip: Write with “parallel structure”. Words in sentences should match in structure and in tense.
