There is no harm (in) trying... Is the preposition in optional?

In American English, “no harm in trying” is much more common but I have heard both and I wouldn’t consider “no harm trying” to be wrong or substandard.

There is no harm trying. Never, ever, before now seen this form. There is no harm in trying. <-- common, standard phrase, often seen.
