Isaac, you are totally right, the names of colors can be nouns, and you may use them as you wish. It is called as "the substantivation of adjectives", and can be extend onto other adjectives. For instance: УМНЫЙ в гору не пойдёт, УМНЫЙ гору обойдёт. Or: СМЕЛЫЙ к победе стремится, СЛАБЫЙ боя боится. Or: - Ну-с, как наш БОЛЬНОЙ? - спросил доктор. - Поправляется. Or: МИЛЫЕ бранятся - только тешатся. Or: МОЛОДОМУ СТАРОГО не понять. By the way, the word "русский" is included into the same category: РУССКИЕ не сдаются. And some words are finally established in Russian in the adjective form, but they are perceived as noun: столовая, мостовая, сумасшедший, портной, "голубой" (it's not a color, it's a homosexual man), прохожий, учёный, водяной, леший, домовой (the latest three ones are fairy tale persons).
