what is the meaning of the 'more than' in the sentence below?
but the alternative was filling in cracks. More than anything else in the world I wanted to paint and I didn't care what it was that I painted.

The whole phrase is 'More than anything else in the world' - in this context it means that painting is the thing the person wants to do most :)

Hi
Actually the sentence has been," I wanted to paint more than anything in the world."
This is an inversion. And we use this to try to highlight something.
