Can you tell me what is the difference between 첫 and 첫번째?

저는 친구 물어봤고 저한테 ""첫"는 줄임말이에요" 말 하고 있는데요. I asked my friend and they said, ""첫" is abbreviated from 첫번째." so there isn't really a difference "첫" is just a shortened version of 첫번째. "Like "mommy" turns to "mom""
