What does "come alone" mean in the following sentence.
“Well, sir, I took no particular notice of his letters. I should not have noticed this one, only it happened to come alone.”
I don't quite understand that bit.
This is from
The Hound of the Baskervilles
by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Thanks in advance

It means it came unaccompanied; in other words, by itself, which arose suspicions. "Come alone" is also used a lot in ransom scenes. The criminals will ask the person to come alone to the meet, meaning without anyone else.
Hope that helps.
Great story you are reading, by the way.
