are these opposite ?
i overcome grief
i am overcome with grief

Yes they are opposite. The first one means you successfully deal with grief and control it.
The second one means the feeling of grief is so strong or has such a strong effect that you cannot think clearly, it's overwhelming. You can also say "I am overcome by grief"
