Is this a very common phrase for Americans? Start off on the wrong foot.

Yes. I'd probably say, "set off on the wrong foot," -- same meaning.

It is used here in Australia and I could use it about myself when talking about people I have met. I thought we would get along with each other but I said the wrong thing and they lost interest in our conversation. I got off on the wrong foot. I should have been more apathetic to other people's views and opinions. Luckily I have since been more understanding and repaired the damage I had done. I hope this helps. Have fun

Ace P what phrase would you use if this isn't very common?

I don't really hear this phrase that much in my circles, but if someone said it, I would understand what they were implying
