职业教师What is your household tradition in exchanging red envelopes (红包,也可作) of money?
In my family, married couples, upon seeing family members that are single as well as good friends that are single, are given two red envelopes filled with money.
Usually with my family, it is a crisp $1 USD bill in each envelope. One aunt does one or two shinny half dollar coins.
I used to spend time with my aunt and uncles as well till both my grand parents passed away (died). So now, if I do not see an aunt or uncle or my brothers do not see their unmarried cousins, no money is given.
How about you? What is the tradition in exchanging the red envelopes of money (红包,也可作)?
How much money do you usually get in China per envelope and family?

红包,又叫压岁钱,岁通“祟”,“压祟”又有避邪之意,长辈给晚辈发红包意喻着长辈对晚辈的祝福,希望晚辈在新的一年里平平安安远离邪祟。
Red envelops, also called new year's money, which older generation give to younger generation (eg.grandfather/motner gives it to grandson/daughter, uncle/aunt to cousins). it means best wishes to next generations. wish them healthy and happy in the new year! and as to how much money, as u wish! but usually according to their own economic condition.

This is not a custom here, but parents/grandparents often help out their children /grandchildren if they can afford it.
