The origin.
한국인 - 韓國人
한국어 - 韓國語
사람 and 말 originated in Korea. Personally, I tend to say 사람 especially when the country name ends with 국(한국, 중국, 미국, 태국 etc). The pronunciation of [-구긴] sounds unpleasant to me. I'd like you to say "저 호주/오스트레일리아 사람이에요", not "저 호주인이에요"(sounds weird). 사람 seems like a soft option.

I figured out why I avoid saying 'ㅇ국인' especially when I ask someone their nationality. '인' doesn't have the honorific form.
You can say 저 호주 사람이에요, but when you ask someone if they are Australian, you should say "호주 분이세요?".
