Wow... I love these kind of subjects !!!! Listen, nonono... wolfs howl all the time , it's a way of communication (to bond to each other or to be clear about who's the boss on that territory) , besides barking and growling. They can do it just for fun, they can do it alone or in groups... at night or dawn. People used to think these cute creatures howled to the moon because when there is a full moon, wolfs are obviously more visible for human eye (they were able to see them) so, wolf-moon were easily associated. ^^

this is a myth ) wolf howls more often than that! like - Owwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!! ))

wolves are mainly preying around dusk and dawn. they need some light to find their prey but too many light would prevent them from 'hiding in the shadows'. full moon's the perfect condition to chase so they howl to let the other wolves know 'hey guys, come here. we go hunting' so it's rather a pack-forming matter than being afraid of something ;)
