"sehr gut" = very good? When is it most appropriate to use "sehr"?

As an adverb to other adjectives, it enhances the adjective and / or makes it stronger, same as "very" in English. gut = good; sehr gut = very good (These two are marks on school reports as well on a scale from 1 (sehr gut) to 6 (ungenügend; insufficient). Other examples: Mein Auto fährt schnell. Ein Formel 1 Auto fährt sehr schnell. Mein Fahrrad ist langsam. Eine Schnecke ist sehr langsam.
