An area is simply a a certain amount of land. For example, the area of my far is 200 hectares. A region is also an area which is is different to other areas and is given a special name. For example, the southern region of China is GZ and that is different to the northern region of China which could be, say, Shandong or another region.

I can tell you only what I would use these 2 words in. If it is a large area, than it is a region. Example: I live in the Northwest region of the United States. An area I would usually use it for smaller places. Example: This area of this room is used for books. I would never say This region of this room is used for books. So for myself, I use area for smaller places and for larger places I use region. I hope this helps.

to throw a curve ball in... how about a zone? a domain? Technically for common speaking, an area is bounded by man made borders whereas a region is an extent shared by common characteristics whether it is man-made or not. Usually a region is much larger than an area. However in mathematics, all these terms have specific meanings.
