What is the difference between "kind of" and "a kind of"?

kind of = more or less.
This apple is kind of sour.
Do you like that girl? Well, kind of.
a kind of = a type of
A German Shepherd is a kind of dog.
A chalet is a kind of house.
Rollerblades are a kind of skates.
(I hope this helps, at least kind of!)
