Does "ravel" and "unravel" mean the same thing or is there a difference? When do I use them? Why is that?

to ravel = v. desfiar, desfazer, desembaraçar; complicar, confundir ou perturbar
to unravel = v. desatar, descosturar; resolver, solucionar
The sweater ravelled out at the elbow.
A grandmother started to unravel a tangle.
