A peeping Tom usually refers to a male who secretly watches people, usually through windows, in the hope that he will see them without their clothes on and/or engaging in something very, very personal. It’s someone who would hide and look through, or peep, people’s windows. A more modern word might be stalker.

Peeping Tom comes from a very old story about Lady Godiva. Her husband demanded very high taxes from his subjects. She pleaded with him to lower the taxes. He said he would if she rode naked on a horse through the towm. She did so, covering her nudity with very long hair. She asked everyone to not look at her as she went by. No-one did except one man called Thomas. Some say he died. Others that he went blind. Tom is short for Thomas and peeping means looking secretly at something.
