The speaker is omitting the subject pronoun "it." It's technically not grammatically correct to do so, but in real life people often speak that way in informal situations. Here, "it" means the message he had just spoken about in the previous sentence: (It) came through his lawyer. The man he's speaking about had his lawyer deliver a message to hide their communication from the authorities.
