After Rowley left yesterday, I really got to work on some comics. I came up with this character called Creighton the Cretin, and I got on a roll.
What does "I got on a roll" mean?

The metaphor is as if pushing something to make it move.
On a roll would mean it moved ahead smoothly and more easily. Rather as a barrel might if you started it rolling.
